Leach Botanical Garden, May 2017

In May 2017 Amanda and I returned to the Leach Botanical Garden on the outer edge of southeast Portland. This time we weren't rushed and could explore the whole 17-acre complex at our leisure. It was full of exciting blooms and berries from a seemingly endless array of plants...

Fields Bridge Park, West Linn, Oregon

Continuing my quest to visit all the parks of Oregon, Amanda and I visited Fields Bridge Park in April 2017. The park is not large, and a good deal of its 19 acres is devoted to ball fields and parking. And yet I would call this park a real gem for the town of West Linn, particularly for someone in a wheelchair, as its flat, well maintained trails hug right along the shore of the gorgeous Tualatin River...

Camas Lily Bloom in Camassia Natural Area, April 2017

April 2017. It was time to return to Camassia Natural Area in West Linn, Oregon. Why? Because the camas lilies were all in bloom of course! Brilliant blue hues blanketed the fields in the park, which is about 26 acres of protected oak groves nestled across from Oregon City. There were other flowers too, white, pink, yellow...

Winter Hike in Champoeg, Oregon

In early February 2017, on a very cold, wet winter's day, I hiked around the Champoeg State Heritage Area outside of Butteville, Oregon. Champoeg (pronounced like "shampooey") was an important settlement in the 19th century and in 1843 formed an early regional government, a key step for the area eventually becoming a state. Today the former townsite is merely a field, but the surrounding 600 or so acres have become a park with forested trails easing along the Willamette River....

Ellie Pritts and Portland's Mississippi District

Angeleno power-player Ellie Pritts and I wandered in April 2017 around a couple of blocks in North Portland's Mississippi District, where there are fun little shops, bars, and coffee shops. Plus, we got to see one of the most wonderfully named parks in town, DeNorval Unthank City Park, or as it's more commonly known: Unthank Park. What a name! And from what I hear, Dr. Unthank himself was pretty amazing too, breaking numerous racial barriers in 20th century Portland...

Return to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, April 2017

Earlier this month I visited the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival and loved every second. It was time to go back, this time with fellow photographers Amanda Ulrich and Tiana Kai. We arrived just at sunrise with a lovely veil of fog. Paradise...

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Portland

In early April 2017 there was a sunny break in the middle of a long stretch of drizzly days; so Amanda Ulrich and I visited the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in SE Portland. The park is about 10 acres packed full of foliage, most importantly all sorts of rhododendrons. And they were all coming into bloom, wow...

Leach Botanical Garden

After our trip to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in April 2017 Amanda Ulrich and I visited the Leach Botanical Garden on the outer edge of southeast Portland.  We didn't have much time as we got there just a few minutes before closing. It is such a lovely spot though that I still had a blast. There are so many interesting plants there, and the whole estate (of about 17 acres) is serene and gorgeous...

Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival 2017

In April 2017 Amanda Ulrich and I visited the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, a little ways outside of Woodburn and Canby, Oregon. I go at least once every year here, and always have a blast. Tulips never disappoint. And the Wooden Shoe farm is one of my favorite Northwest destinations...

Venice, Day 5: Giardinetti Reali

On day 5 of my Venetian adventures in December 2015, I visited the Giardinetti Reali. It's a wonderful little oasis of calm and greenery, steps away from the wild humanity of Piazza San Marco. The last time I was there the park was overrun delightfully with cats. The cats now though are all gone, as they are gone from every corner of Venice...

Venice, Day 7: Wandering Alone

On day 7 of my Venetian adventures in December 2015, I spent the evening wandering the glorious streets one last time before my plane took off in the morning. The city is so endlessly interesting to me, with its tiny alleyways, its abhorrence of 90-degree angles, its colors, its style, its life. I can't wait to return...

Portait: Jenna at Powell Butte

Traveling model Jenna shot with me at Powell Butte in Portland, Oregon, in March 2017. We have had one of the rainiest years on record here in rainy PDX, but Jenna and I somehow got to have an hour to stand outside and not get drenched. This year that qualifies as miraculous...

Opening Day at the AC Hotel Portland

I was invited to the opening of the new AC Hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon. They built it in what was a funny old vacant lot that everyone just used as a shortcut at a busy intersection. Now it's a charming place to stay steps away from the Pioneer Place shopping mall and other downtown attractions. The best part of it for me, hands down, is they have a bunch of local artwork and local food and drinks...

Camassia Natural Area, West Linn, Oregon

In February 2017 Amanda Ulrich and I visited Camassia Natural Area in West Linn, Oregon.  It's about 26 wooded acres nestled on a ridge overlooking Oregon City.  There are wetlands and oak groves, with the whole area sprinkled with large erratics (rocks brought here by ancient ice-age floods)...

Oregon City Wanderings

Just after exploring Camassia Natural Area, Amanda Ulrich and I wandered around Oregon City, Oregon, in February 2017. It's a great little city, anchored by the mighty Willamette Falls. Soon the old Blue Heron paper mill will be rebuilt as a new waterfront for the city with apartments, condos, restaurants, and business spaces. Then the whole area will begin to transform. Cannot wait to watch these huge changes happen before all our eyes.

Eve Connell

Portland, Oregon, is full of great creative people. Singer Eve Connell is one of them. In February 2017 we shot together at Sellwood Riverfront Park in southeast Portland. With her charm and fearlessness, she's like our town's own Mary Tyler Moore. It was fun to capture some of that spirit.

Tulips in My Kitchen

The best part of late winter is tulips begin appearing. They are one of my favorite flowers, though they aren't around for as long as I'd like them to be. (Roses, for instance, can hang around this area for half the year.) But because of that tulips symbolize the return of spring to me. New life is here, and many other flowers will soon appear as well. Oh, and the amazing Wooden Shoe tulip farm will soon open. Can't wait for that!

Opal Creek and Jawbone Flats, Oregon

In January 2015 I explored Opal Creek and the quasi-ghost town of Jawbone Flats (population 5) in the central Cascade Mountains in Oregon. The area is thick with gorgeous fir trees, and the water in the creeks and rivers is crystal clear.  It's so clear in fact that when it pools, it looks insanely, surreally blue...

A Week with a 2017 Prius Prime

For a week this February, the good folks at Toyota USA let me have a brand new 2017 Prius Prime, the plug-in hybrid atop of the Prius line. What's the difference between it and a regular Prius? Well, I drove the wheels off it and didn't use a drop of gasoline. Instead I was able to recharge the batteries via any standard electrical outlet. Pretty awesome. I love though that it still has a gas tank for a back-up in case I had found myself somewhere without outlets. To me, that is a big plus over a typical electric car...

Sauvie Island Fashion Shoot for Rogue Minx (Post 2 of 2)

In May 2015, I worked with Rogue Minx Clothing on a great fashion shoot at Sauvie Island, Oregon. Hair and makeup was by Marie. The models were AjaZoë, and Sarah. Here's the second of two posts about that day.

Nate Bowman, Welder

Professional welder Nate Bowman and I shot together by Portland's Broadway Bridge in January 2017. It had been a long time since I was able to shoot some welding, so it was great fun to re-learn the basics of getting good shots with that much variation of light. Can't wait for the next opportunity to shoot with him! What's more fun that sparks of fire? Not much...
